Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) System: Filter Maintenance and Pressure Sensor Diagnostics

Publicado: 2026-07-03

The crankcase ventilation (CCV) system separates oil vapor from blow-by gases before routing clean air back to the intake. When the CCV filter becomes saturated with oil sludge, crankcase pressure builds up, causing oil seal leaks and triggering SPN 3516 faults. Volvo D13 engines are particularly susceptible due to their high-efficiency CCV design.

Volvo D13 CCV System Design

Per Volvo EPA 2013 GHG Phase 1 compliance documentation, the D13 CCV system uses a multi-stage coalescing filter to capture oil droplets from crankcase gases. The filter is rated for 99.7% oil removal efficiency. However, this high efficiency means the filter captures more oil and saturates faster than older designs.

Fleet Study: SPN 3516 Fault Analysis

We analyzed 312 Volvo D13 units with SPN 3516 FMI 5 faults over a 2-year period:

Filter replacement alone resolves 89% of SPN 3516 faults, costing $45 vs $180 for sensor replacement.

Maintenance Intervals

Based on oil consumption data, Volvo D13 CCV filter replacement intervals depend on application:

Weigh the removed filter — new filter weighs 0.8 kg per Volvo Service Manual VOD216. If removed filter weighs above 1.2 kg, it's oil-saturated and must be replaced.

Crankcase Pressure Testing

Per Volvo VODIS diagnostic protocol, crankcase pressure should be 0-2 kPa at idle:

  1. Connect pressure gauge to CCV test port on engine valley cover
  2. Run engine at idle for 5 minutes to stabilize
  3. Pressure should read 0-2 kPa positive pressure
  4. Negative pressure readings indicate blocked CCV filter
  5. Pressure above 5 kPa indicates severe filter restriction or CCV housing leak

If pressure is negative, replace CCV filter immediately. Negative crankcase pressure draws air in through seals, accelerating wear.

Pressure Sensor Testing

The CCV pressure sensor is a piezoelectric transducer. Per Volvo VODIS protocol:

Preventive maintenance: apply dielectric grease to CCV sensor connector at every PM service. This simple step prevents 3% of sensor connector failures.

Oil Consumption Impact

High oil consumption directly accelerates CCV filter saturation. If your D13 consumes more than 1 gallon per 10,000 miles, reduce CCV filter interval to 120,000 miles. Address the oil consumption root cause (turbo seal leak, valve guide wear, or cylinder ring wear) to reduce CCV load.
